‘Quickly, go to the phone'

His deep voice filled with urgency, Texas evangelist Mike Murdock wasted little time getting to the point.

“I've asked the Holy Spirit for 3,000 people today who will become a monthly partner with this incredible ministry,” Murdock said during a February television broadcast on the Inspiration Network. “Fifty-eight dollars a month just for 12 months. Give God four seasons. If God don't bless your socks off, he's a liar.”

Soon, Murdock stepped up his pitch for donations to the Inspiration Ministries.

“There's a phone number on the screen. Quickly, go to the phone. … Delayed obedience is disobedience.”

Network CEO David Cerullo added: “Mike, ever since you began teaching the principle of the $58 seed here … I tell you we have seen more miracle answers to prayer. I mean unbelievable things in people's family and their finances and their physical bodies. It's come as a result of sowing a seed.”

Cerullo said he has boxes filled with testimony from donors who experienced miracles.

He spoke of a war veteran who had been unable to collect his pension and disability pay from the government. His wife sowed the $58 “seed” and soon her husband had collected $36,000 in back pay. Then the government paid him $11,000 toward a new van.

“Hallelujah,” Murdock said, raising his hands in praise. “Hallelujah.” Ames Alexander

‘The Lord's speaking to you'

Peering into the TV camera last month, Steve Munsey assured viewers of “Inspiration Today!” that God had willed them to tune in – and to send a cash offering.

“The spirit of the Lord spoke to me very strongly – all week, he's been speaking to me strongly – to give a $200 offering,” Munsey said as he strolled the set, reaching for what he called “props,” a phone and computer. “For some of you, God has spoken to give five of those – that's $1,000.”

Looking on approvingly was host David Cerullo. In a few moments, he and Munsey – head of Family Christian Center in Munster, Ind. – would join hands, bow their heads and pray for those who understood that God was ready to bestow seven blessings, including prosperity and physical healing, on those who donated. “Our obedience, our offering, is what positions us to receive blessings,” Cerullo would say to close the show.

But first, Munsey had to wind up his appeal.

“Today, you need to go to the phone and it needs to be the biggest offering,” he said “There's a businessman watching me. The Lord's speaking to you to give $20,000. Because he wants to do miraculous things in your business.” Tim Funk
