Learning From The Fear of the Lord

With recent situations in my life, I found myself fearing the future. Normally this is not the case for me but the events, which shall remain private, caused me to do so. Fortunately I was able to confess my fear to a Christian Brother. He quickly sent back several verses on fear that I read. I have been thinking about fear and the Christian walk for some time now. I have looked at many verses that deal with fear. The Bible says much about fear. This article is a result of what I feel that the HOLY SPIRIT is impressing upon me to write and keep dear to my heart.

The Bible says much on fear and I feel that this article should start with the following:

Job 28:28

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Psalms 111:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 15:33

The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Isaiah 11:

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

Isaiah 33:6

And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.

I have always thought it wise to fear your maker; this one step is the beginning of wisdom. For those who do not fear the Lord, this article will mean nothing. Let us fear the Lord always. It is amazing that even fear in the Lord is a blessing. For I have known fear in the worldly sense and it has never been a blessing. This fear can be crippling; the worst I have experienced caused me to rapidly loose weight and become physically ill. I never want to experience this again. A healthy fear in the Lord is just the opposite! It is a blessing! It is up lifting! I honestly believe that the Lord smiles down upon those who fear Him. What an honor.

God will protect those who fear Him:

Genesis 15:1

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Genesis 50:21

Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

Exodus 14:13

And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

Exodus 23:27

I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.

Deuteronomy 3:22

Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.

Psalms 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Genesis 26:24

And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

Are we to fear man?

II Kings 6:16

And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

Psalms 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalms 27:3

Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

Psalms 56:4

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Psalms 118:6

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Proverbs 3:25

Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

Matthew 10:28

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Luke 12:5

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

God will provide for you.

Matthew 10:31

Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Luke 12:7

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Luke 12:32

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

I was in a meeting that was interrupted by a hysterical secretary. In her obvious manner and tone, she looked at me and said, "You have to meet your wife at the hospital, something is wrong with your baby!" All eyes were on me as I calmly got up and left the room. I fell apart as soon as I got in the car. My child was barely 4 days old!

On the way to the hospital I prayed. I was afraid that I was going to loose my child. I fearfully gave this to the Lord. If you knew how much I like to stay in control of my surroundings, this was a difficult thing to do. I fearfully gave the life of my child over to God. I told God that I loved that child but I would accept any outcome that He willed. It was at this point that I believe that Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ healed that child, for I experienced a peace that surpassed all understanding at that moment.

Luke 1:50

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Psalms 103:11

For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

Psalms 103:13

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

Psalms 115:11

Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

Psalms 115:13

He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

Through that event I also realized how little control of my surroundings I really had! This event was a catalyst that pushed me to walk closer with the Lord.

I have often wondered, "Where is the wisdom in fear?" Fear is what drove me to realize that I have very little control of my surroundings. Fear is what drove me to place my confidence in the Lord. As a side note, God is in control all the time, it is when we place our confidence in Him that our eyes are opened! So placing my confidence in the Lord opened my eyes to my surroundings. I was then able (with some work on my part) to see where God is working around me. Knowing this, one is able to now ask God how they can be used to further His work. If this is not wisdom, then I do not know what is. Believe me this is not an easy task and I mess up often, but I can definitely see that fear of the Lord is wisdom.

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 14:26

In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

There is so much more that the Bible says on fear and situations, I felt lead to touch upon these topics. One can spend a lifetime reading and learning about what the Bible says about fear. It is my choice to fear and trust in the Lord. Jesus is my salvation. What is your choice?

Romans 8:15

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

II Corinthians 7:1

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Proverbs 19:23

The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
